Amritsar police conducted a raid on an illegal spa centre operating under the guise of a legitimate business in a hotel near the interstate bus terminus, resulting in the apprehension of several individuals and the exposure of a prostitution racket. The incident unfolded last night, leading to injuries and arrests.
During the raid, two women from Thailand reportedly jumped from the fifth floor of the hotel, where the illicit spa was located, to the third floor of an adjacent building in a desperate attempt to escape. They sustained multiple fractures from the fall and are currently receiving medical treatment at a local hospital.
Law enforcement officials have confirmed the arrest of three additional Thai women at the scene. According to police reports, the hotel owners and the spa centre manager are implicated in running a prostitution ring, concealed behind the facade of a spa.
Gurinderbir Singh Sidhu, Assistant Commissioner of Police (East), stated that a case has been registered under several sections of the law. These include Sections 3, 4, and 5 of the Immoral Trafficking Act and Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, and charges have been brought against the Thai women, the spa centre manager named Simran, and the hotel owners identified as Manish, Ajay, Sajan, and Jagdeep.
Initial details of the incident were not immediately disclosed by the police. However, a video captured by a local resident, showing the injured women being transported to an ambulance on stretchers, quickly spread across social media, bringing the event to public attention. The police operation was led by Baljinder Singh, Station House Officer (SHO) of the Ram Bagh police station.
The circumstances surrounding the women’s fall remain under investigation. It is unclear whether they intentionally jumped to evade arrest or accidentally fell in the darkness. While these two women fell from the fifth to the third floor, the other three Thai women were apprehended inside the spa centre itself.
According to the ACP (East), preliminary investigations indicate that four of the Thai women were in India on tourist visas valid for one year. The visa status of the fifth woman, currently hospitalized, is still being verified.
Police also revealed that access to the fifth floor of the hotel, where the illegal activities were taking place, was restricted to regular hotel guests. Only select “special customers” were permitted entry to this area.
The manager of the spa centre, Simran, and three Thai women are currently in police custody. Raids are ongoing to locate and arrest the remaining individuals involved in the operation.
This recent action follows a prior raid by the Rambagh police on two spa centres in Celebration Mall just the day before. Acting on intelligence suggesting prostitution activities, that earlier raid resulted in the arrest of ten individuals, including women, and a case was registered in connection to those spa centres as well.
