Nestled amidst the breathtaking Pir Panjal range of the Himalayas, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa stands as a beacon of luxury and tranquility. Perched at 8,825 feet above sea level, this resort offers unparalleled views and an unforgettable experience, making it a premier destination for travelers seeking both adventure and relaxation in Gulmarg. My recent visit, after two previously postponed trips, solidified its place as one of India’s most exquisite retreats.
The journey from Srinagar airport to The Khyber itself is a visual treat. As we drove, the panoramic vistas unfolded, each turn revealing more of the stunning landscape. Arriving in April, just after a significant snowfall, the valley was transformed into a pristine white wonderland, a scene straight from a picture postcard. The warm welcome from the resort staff upon arrival was just the beginning of the exceptional hospitality that defined my stay.
Stepping into the lobby, I was immediately struck by the sense of spaciousness and refined elegance. The design seamlessly blends local Kashmiri elements with modern luxury. Dark wood paneling, plush furnishings, and intricately patterned carpets create an atmosphere of warmth and sophistication. The check-in process was swift and welcoming, accompanied by a comforting cup of traditional Kahwa tea. Shortly after, I was escorted to my Himalayan Luxury room, ready to immerse myself in the comfort and views that awaited.
Hotel Ambiance and Design
Sprawling across 7 acres, The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa boasts 85 rooms, each designed to provide an intimate and luxurious experience. The resort’s architecture and interior design are a testament to understated elegance, incorporating local materials and craftsmanship at every turn.
From the Khatamband ceilings adorning the walkways to the locally sourced Deodar wood used in construction, every detail reflects the region’s rich heritage. Wagu mats on spa doors and traditional jharokhas add authentic Kashmiri touches. Floor-to-ceiling windows are strategically placed throughout the resort, perfectly framing the breathtaking views of the snow-covered landscape and filling the interiors with natural light, beautifully complementing the rich, dark furnishings.
Covered walkways ensure comfortable movement between facilities, even in snowy conditions. The spa, gym, and recreational areas are conveniently interconnected, enhancing the guest experience. A standout feature is the indoor heated swimming pool, offering panoramic valley views, alongside a state-of-the-art gym, catering to both relaxation and wellness.
Luxurious Rooms with Breathtaking Views
The Himalayan Luxury Room was a sanctuary of comfort and style. Spacious and thoughtfully designed, it featured custom-made furniture and a private patio. The patio became my personal haven, offering uninterrupted views of the majestic mountains that surrounded the resort.
Upon entering the room, a large wall mirror immediately catches the eye, enhancing the sense of space. Adjacent to it, a walk-in closet leads to a bathroom that is nothing short of spectacular. The highlight of the bathroom is undoubtedly the bathtub, perfectly positioned to offer stunning views of the Affarwat Peaks.
Many mornings were blissfully spent soaking in the tub, lost in the mesmerizing views and tranquility.
Culinary Delights: A Taste of Kashmir
Food enthusiasts will find themselves in gastronomic paradise at The Khyber. The dining experience masterfully blends modern culinary techniques with the rich flavors of traditional Kashmiri cuisine. A must-try is the elaborate Kashmiri Wazwan meal, a feast for the senses.
For non-vegetarians, the Wazwan is an unforgettable experience. Influenced by Afghan and Asian culinary traditions, it is rich in aromatic spices like cinnamon and saffron. Served on a Tarami plate, the meal includes a generous portion of rice accompanied by an array of dishes such as Doon Chetin (walnut chutney), Tamator Paneer, Ghustaba, Rista, Nadru Yakhni (lotus stem dish), Haak Saag, Tabak Maas, and Dhaniwal Korma. The local lamb is particularly noteworthy, exceptionally juicy and flavorful. Despite the richness of the Wazwan, the Phirni dessert is a must-try to complete the culinary journey.
Dining Options at The Khyber
Cloves: This is the resort’s main dining space, offering buffet and à la carte options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The breakfast buffet features a diverse selection, including excellent South Indian dishes like Idli and Dosa. For ultimate relaxation, breakfast in bed is also available.
Chaikash: A charming spot for light refreshments, tea, coffee, and quiet moments with a book.
Calabash: The resort’s sheesha lounge, offering a relaxed ambiance.
Activities and Wellness
The Khyber Himalayan Resort & Spa provides a wealth of activities to enhance your stay. The state-of-the-art gym and world-class spa facilities are perfect for wellness enthusiasts. Imagine working out with panoramic mountain views or unwinding in the heated indoor pool overlooking the snow-covered scenery.
For those preferring indoor entertainment, a dedicated cinema room with a curated collection of Hollywood and Bollywood movies offers a cozy retreat. However, the highlight for relaxation is The Khyber Spa by L’Occitane. My Almond Detox massage was a sublime experience, starting with a soothing foot massage and followed by the application of aromatic oils and expert massage techniques that dissolved every knot and tension.
Exploring Gulmarg: Sightseeing and Adventure
Beyond the resort’s luxurious comforts, Gulmarg offers a variety of attractions. Sightseeing on my second day included visits to the revered 500-year-old shrine of Baba Reshi, the historic St. Mary’s Church, Rani Temple, and Maharaja’s Palace, each offering a glimpse into the rich cultural and historical tapestry of the region.
The Gondola ride, just minutes from the resort, was a highlight of the third day. A cable car journey to Phase 1 opens up a world of winter sports. From sledding and skiing to ATV rides and snowmobiling, Gulmarg is a haven for adventure enthusiasts.
My first experience snowmobiling was exhilarating and added an adventurous dimension to my Gulmarg visit.
