Steel production, a cornerstone of modern industry, generates substantial by-products, with slag constituting approximately 90%. Alarmingly, a significant portion of this slag ends up in landfills, representing a missed opportunity to reclaim valuable metal oxides and silicon dioxides. Recognizing this challenge, Tenova Spa, a leading company in innovative metallurgical and industrial solutions, is at the forefront of transforming steelmaking by-product management through advanced slag valorization technologies.
Tenova SPA’s commitment to sustainable practices is exemplified by its key role in the EU-funded iSlag project. This initiative aims to optimize the valorization of slag generated from electric steelmaking processes. By developing cutting-edge digital solutions, iSlag, with Tenova SPA as a technology leader, is paving the way for enhanced recycling and post-treatment methods. These advancements are crucial for fostering a more sustainable and circular economy within the steel industry.
Tenova SPA’s expertise in metallurgical processes and industrial automation was instrumental in the iSlag project. Over four years, Tenova’s engineers developed and rigorously field-tested the innovative Tenova Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) system. This system provides rapid and accurate analysis of solid slag composition directly on-site, marking a significant breakthrough in real-time material characterization within steel production environments.
The implementation of Tenova’s diagnostic systems for real-time slag analysis within the iSlag project has yielded remarkable results. By providing precise and timely data on slag composition, the LIBS system has significantly improved the control and efficiency of recycling and reuse processes. This enhanced control directly translates into a reduced environmental footprint for steelmaking operations and simultaneously boosts economic viability through optimized resource utilization and waste reduction.
Paolo Galbiati, Industrial Process Senior Director at TenarisDalmine, highlighted the impact of Tenova’s technology, stating, “Being part of the iSlag project has been a valuable research opportunity for us to explore new ways to improve the efficiency of our production processes and reduce environmental impact… The tests conducted at our plant demonstrated how real-time slag composition analysis, using the LIBS system, can significantly optimize process and material recycling. The results highlight its potential to reduce waste and increase both economic and environmental sustainability in steel production.”
Tenova SPA’s dedication to innovation and sustainability positions the company as a key driver in the steel industry’s transition towards a greener future. Through projects like iSlag and the development of advanced technologies like the LIBS system, Tenova SPA is not only addressing the immediate challenges of slag management but also contributing significantly to the long-term decarbonization goals of the steel sector, fostering a more sustainable and resource-efficient industrial landscape globally.
