Tired of the corporate grind? Feeling the need to escape the relentless pace of work? While I’ve always enjoyed budget travel and the thrill of exploring new places on a shoestring, I’ve recently discovered the profound joy of do-nothing holidays, or “staycations.” These are the kind of trips where your hotel isn’t just a place to sleep, but a destination in itself. No jam-packed itineraries, no must-see monuments. Just pure relaxation in your room, leisurely reading, movie marathons, a refreshing beer, a dip in the pool, and perhaps a rejuvenating spa experience. 😉
My first getaway of 2017 was to Ganpatipule, and it marked my first solo leisure trip. While I’ve traveled alone extensively, it’s usually been for work, with brief windows to explore the city. This trip was a long-awaited escape that had been postponed three times before finally materializing in late February. My destination? The luxurious Blue Ocean Resort and Spa by Apodis in Ganpatipule.
The Scenic Journey to Serenity
I opted for the Goa-bound Mandovi Express, a train known for its scenic route, though less so for its punctuality. True to form, I arrived in Ratnagiri two hours behind schedule. However, any travel weariness instantly vanished as Yogesh from Blue Ocean Resort greeted me with a warm smile. He was not only my airport transfer but would also be my guide to the town and surrounding areas over the next three days.
The drive to Ganpatipule from Ratnagiri took approximately 45 minutes, and it was nothing short of breathtaking. We followed the coastal road, with the stunning Aarey Warey beach unfolding beside us like a painted masterpiece. We paused the car at a vantage point to truly absorb the vastness of the ocean. I was genuinely awestruck that such a place existed in my home state. Rural Maharashtra truly holds hidden gems of charm and largely unexplored beauty.

An Oasis of Tranquility: The Stay at Blue Ocean Resort and Spa by Apodis
My first impression of Blue Ocean Resort and Spa by Apodis was of a verdant oasis. The property was enveloped in lush greenery, with thousands of trees creating a cool and refreshing atmosphere, even under the bright afternoon sun. The location was incredibly peaceful, perfectly suited for anyone seeking respite from the daily grind of work and city life.

Time seemed to slow down at the resort, allowing for true relaxation. During my three-day stay, I found myself reluctant to even leave the property to explore the town. The resort was so self-contained, offering everything I needed for a perfect escape.
My tropical garden view villa was a delightful haven, featuring a lovely sit-out area in the backyard. This private verandah opened onto a small plantation of bougainvillea, chikoo, and love apple trees. Simply sitting there, surrounded by nature and spotting local birds, was a pleasure in itself.

A tour of the property revealed its expansive size. Spread across 80 acres, the resort boasts 38 Portuguese-style villas, along with an executive wing and two luxurious beach villas. Amenities are plentiful and cater to every need: two restaurants offering diverse cuisines, a sparkling swimming pool, a fun-filled kids’ water park, a business center, a dedicated yoga room, a well-equipped gym, a jacuzzi, a rejuvenating spa, and, most impressively, private access to the pristine Malgund beach. A Ganesh temple perched on a hilltop within the resort grounds offers breathtaking sunset views, although the climb was a bit challenging for my less-than-stellar stamina.
Malgund beach is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful and unspoiled beaches I’ve encountered in Maharashtra. I visited Ganpatipule beach on my final day, and while popular, it simply couldn’t compare to the cleanliness and tranquility of Malgund. One memorable morning, while relaxing in a beachside gazebo, I even spotted three playful dolphins leaping out of the sea.

As dusk approached, I indulged in a deeply relaxing foot massage at the in-house Sukho Thai spa, located conveniently near the beach at Blue Ocean Resort and Spa by Apodis. The sound of the waves gently crashing in the background amplified the de-stressing experience – though, perhaps a foot massage is always blissful in such a setting!

Cycling around the Malgund beach was another enjoyable activity. After working up an appetite, I savored delicious prawns Koliwada and home-style chicken curry with rice at the resort’s Atlantic restaurant.

Mobile connectivity was limited at Blue Ocean Resort and Spa by Apodis, which, surprisingly, was a welcome change. It allowed for uninterrupted “me” time and a true digital detox. I made it a point to have my meals at the restaurant, where complimentary WiFi was available, allowing me to briefly connect with family and friends back home.

Exploring Ganpatipule Beyond the Resort
While Blue Ocean Resort and Spa by Apodis offered ample reasons to stay within its serene confines, Ganpatipule and its surroundings have attractions worth exploring.
For a cultural immersion, the Prachin Konkan Museum showcases 500 years of Konkan culture through fascinating life-size dioramas. History enthusiasts can hike to the Jaigad fort, a historic site once ruled by the Marathas. The renowned Ganesh temple on Ganpatipule beach is a major draw for pilgrims and tourists alike. However, if you’ve come to appreciate the quietude of Malgund, the bustling crowds at the Ganpatipule temple and beach might be a bit overwhelming.

On my departure day, after checking out of the resort, I made a quick detour to Thibaw’s Palace in Ratnagiri. This historical palace served as the exile residence of the last king of Burma after Burma’s defeat in the Third Anglo-Burmese War in 1885. Unfortunately, the palace was closed on Mondays, so I couldn’t explore the interiors.
That marked the final stop of my rejuvenating trip. Yogesh then kindly dropped me at the Ratnagiri railway station for my train back to Mumbai. His parting words, “Wapas aana” (Come back again), were met with my reply, “Family ke saath” (With family next time) 🙂
