A Korean Massage Spa, or jjimjilbang (찜질방), offers a unique and deeply relaxing cultural experience. Inspired by Steven Yeun and Conan O’Brien’s visit to a Korean bathhouse, I recently indulged in the services at Loess Spa in Kalihi, Hawaii, to experience this tradition firsthand. This article delves into my experience with their renowned Korean body scrub and meridian therapy, offering insights and tips for your own visit.
Immerse Yourself in the Korean Spa Tradition
Loess Spa welcomes guests with a charming pastel orange exterior and a tranquil enclosed garden. After check-in, you’re provided with a locker key, gown and slippers. The women-only locker room leads to various amenities, including charcoal and red clay saunas, a massage room and the main bathhouse. The bathhouse features showers, hot and cold baths, a sauna and a dedicated area for body scrubs. Before your treatment, immerse yourself in the hot bath (105°F) to soften skin and open pores, and perhaps try a quick dip in the invigorating cold plunge (-9.5°F).
The Exfoliating Korean Body Scrub
The Korean body scrub, a signature treatment at Loess Spa, takes place in a private curtained area. My therapist, Moon, guided me onto a waterproof cot and began the hour-long session ($100). With an exfoliating mitt and a floral sugar scrub, she meticulously scrubbed every inch of my body, removing layers of dead skin. The process, though intense, was surprisingly relaxing. The scrub was followed by a soothing face and scalp massage, shampoo and a face mask. The result? Incredibly soft and clean skin. Loess Spa suggests that Korean body scrubs offer benefits beyond exfoliation, including cleaner pores, improved circulation and enhanced skin health.
Harnessing Energy with Meridian Therapy
Following the body scrub, I experienced meridian therapy ($100 for one hour), a traditional Asian medicine practice aimed at balancing the body’s energy flow. Moon used deep tissue massage and tools to apply pressure along my meridians, the body’s energy pathways. While some areas were sensitive, the overall experience was deeply relaxing, albeit intense. The session also included cupping therapy, which left temporary but noticeable marks. Loess Spa emphasizes that meridian therapy is not a medical treatment and requires a waiver. It’s recommended for those seeking energy boosts and improved circulation but is not advisable for pregnant women or individuals recovering from major surgery.
Post-Treatment Relaxation and Refreshment
After the treatments, I enjoyed a bowl of refreshing bibim kooksoo ($15) in the spa’s garden. The spicy cold noodles, topped with cucumbers, onions and a boiled egg, were the perfect way to conclude my Korean massage spa experience.
